They Call Me Brave

“Sometimes my hair falls out. It’s what happens when the medicine fights the cancer.”

“But I am still beautiful!”

"When I tell you my daughter lit up and smiled on every page, it's an understatement. The book perfectly captured what she is going through
& I'm going to get a copy for her 1st grade teacher because I think it's so helpful for other kids to see as well."

They Call Me Brave follows the true story of seven-year-old Ava and her journey fighting cancer. Ava’s story goes beyond cancer, however, and proves that although she might be sick, she’s still unstoppable. Through honesty and humor, this book empowers children and their families to keep moving forward no matter what medical issue they may be experiencing.

This book shows children that they, too, are like Ava: strong, beautiful, funny, and Brave. Together, we can shift the narrative of how we speak to kids about cancer. Let’s drive awareness, empathy, and inclusion throughout our children’s lives in the face of adversity.

About the Author

Shane Autumn's passion for storytelling began at a young age, which led her to a career in Communications where she helps other people tell their own unique stories. Having seen the impact childhood cancer had on her own niece Ava, Shane Autumn wanted to illustrate both the struggles and the joys of life through a story that Ava and other children could relate to.

Inspired by Ava's bravery, Shane Autumn wrote "They Call Me Brave" because she saw a need for a book that empowered children facing illnesses to feel confident, accepted, and brave. She also hopes that this book encourages other parents and teachers to shift the narrative when speaking to their children about cancer, ultimately creating a more inclusive world for all kids.

Shane Autumn lives in San Diego, California.
